The intensive care department at Imam Al-Hujjah Hospital saved the life of a man in his 20s who had been involved in an accident.
Dr. Hussein Al-Hajj, head of the ICU, stated: “The young man had lost consciousness due to a brain hemorrhage. He also sustained rib fractures which resulted in pneumothorax and hemothorax. The patient’s left lung had collapsed and his SpO2 (oxygen saturation) was below normal.” Dr. Al-Hajj added: “The patient was admitted to the ICU after receiving primary care at the emergency ward. Immediately after intubation, we began to treat his pneumothorax and the accumulation of blood in the pleural cavity using a chest tube. He underwent chest bracing therapy to correct the position of his ribs, thus avoiding any further complications to his health condition.”
Dr. Al-Hajj continued: “We kept the patient under constant monitoring at the ICU for two days where he received the necessary treatment. He began to regain consciousness and spontaneous breathing. We disconnected him from the ventilator and sent him to the inpatient ward to continue his treatment. The young man’s family were overcome with joy upon hearing the good news about their son’s improving condition.”
It’s worth mentioning that the physicians who supervised this case were Dr. Hazim Moojid (neurosurgeon), Dr. Firas Al-Faham (cardiothoracic surgeon), and Dr. Hussein Al-Hajj (intensivist/anesthesiologist).
