Imam Al-Hujjah Hospital received a rare case of a young man suffering from a change in the pitch of his voice and difficulty swallowing. The patient’s MRI result revealed the existence of a lump under his tongue.
The patient immediately underwent an MRI test using contrast dye to determine the type of tissue mass. The head of the radiology department, Dr. Falah Al-Sabagh stated: The causes of this lump are many, especially throat and tongue tumors, in addition to a number of other benign causes.
To confirm the diagnosis, the patient underwent a neck ultrasound which revealed that his thyroid gland was not in its normal position below the neck.
Dr. Falah added: “This is a rare condition (1/100,000). It occurs when the thyroid gland does not move from its fetal position behind the tongue to its normal position below the neck.”
The thyroid gland starts to form in the 4th week of pregnancy and then moves towards its position below the neck and reaches it by the time the fetus is two months old. For unknown reasons, the thyroid gland may stop moving. This condition requires invasive or non-invasive treatment, depending on the type and severity of the symptoms that result from the irregular position of the gland.
If left untreated, it could swell and lead to suffocation.
