Imam Al-Hujjah Hospital received an emergency case for a child from Najaf who had been in a car accident that caused him a loss of consciousness, irregular breathing, and fluctuation of oxygen level. The child was in critical condition.

He underwent brain and chest CT scan tests which revealed that he was suffering from a concussion and a total collapse of the left lung with increased swelling of the right lung without pneumothorax. This resulted in the heart moving to the collapsed side of the lung.

The patient was admitted to the ICU and placed on a ventilator with control of the air pressure entering the lungs to prevent pneumothorax of the healthy lung. After five days of drug therapy, respiratory physiotherapy, and repeated fluid aspiration of the trachea, the normal function of the child’s left lung was restored. The ventilator was disconnected when he regained consciousness and could breathe on his own. He left the ICU once his condition started to improve and continued his treatment at the inpatient ward. The young boy’s parents were overwhelmed with joy upon knowing that their child’s life has been saved, expressing their gratitude to our medical and nursing staff for this miraculous achievement.

Neurosurgeon Dr. Ali Ammer Al-Shafei and anesthesiologist/intensivist Dr. Hussein Al-Hajj followed up on the patient’s condition at the ICU of Imam Al-Hujjah Hospital.
