The intensive care team at Imam Al-Hujjah saved the life of a woman in her 60s suffering from a severe brain hemorrhage. Head of the ICU, Dr. Hussein Al-Haj stated that “the patient was admitted to the emergency department at 2:00 AM with a 4/15 score on the Glasgow coma scale. Her oxygen level was low due to pulmonary aspiration, and she received an immediate diagnosis after the brain CT scan which showed severe bleeding in the cranial cavity.”

The patient underwent a supra-major surgery performed by neurosurgeon Hazim Moojid. Dr. Moojid stated: “after the success of the surgery, the patient was sent to the ICU and received tracheal intubation. All the required lab tests were carried out and the patient received the necessary treatment, nutrition, and physiotherapy.”
The pulmonary aspiration resulted in a partial blockage in the bronchioles which was treated via bronchoscopy, performed by pulmonologist Qasim Al-Azawi.

Seven days after being admitted to the ICU, the doctors noticed a small blood clot in the patient’s left leg. She received an inferior vena cava (IVC) filter placement to protect her heart, brain, and lungs from thrombosis.
The patient stayed in the ICU for 21 days, during which she started to regain consciousness and scored 14/15 on the Glasgow coma scale. The tracheal tube was removed and the ventilator was disconnected when the patient was able to fully rely on her spontaneous breathing. Her oxygen level was back to normal and she was discharged from the hospital with the proper prescription.
