A medical team at Imam al-Hujjah Hospital succeeded in performing a plastic surgery and orthodontic surgery on a 22-year-old young man who was suffering from a deviated nose and birth defects.

Otolaryngologist Abbas Al-Kalabi said: “The young man suffers from congenital deformities in the external shape of the nose, with a deviated nasal septum and enlarged nasal turbinates.”

He adds: “We performed a plastic surgery on the patient, corrected the nose, and modified the nasal septum.”

In details, Dr. Al-Kalabi explained, “This is a major and important type of surgery. It took approximately two and a half hours.”

He adds: “The surgery was conducted easily and smoothly with the efforts of the medical and nursing staff at the O.R. and the anesthesia staff under the supervision of Dr. Zaid Al-Moussawi.”

The surgeon pointed out, “At Imam al-Hujjah Hospital, we perform surgeries of this kind almost daily, and they’re done at the highest level of quality in the holy city of Karbala.”

For his part, Dr. Zaid Al-Moussawi, an anesthesiologist at our hospital, confirmed that “this surgery is considered special because rhinoplasty poses a great challenge for the surgeon and anesthesiologist.”

He adds: “In such surgeries, a controlled pressure drop method is used to reduce bleeding during the operation and so that the surgeon can see the wound clearly, because the area of the nose is abundant with blood vessels, so any increase in blood pressure will cause severe bleeding. We also prevent the sharp drop in pressure using special medications and devices.”

The anesthesiologist concludes: “We were able to overcome these difficulties and get the patient out in good health.”
