A medical team from Imam al-Hujjah Hospital in Karbala was able to save the life of a 16-year-old patient, who was suffering from an almost complete urethral obstruction. The team was led by Dr. Amir al-Araji, a urology specialist.
According to the surgeon, the obstruction led to significant damage to the bladder and severe dilatation of the kidneys and ureters, causing kidney failure, as a result of which the patient had to undergo dialysis several times.
The doctor explained that three consecutive surgeries were performed on the patient, the first was a nephrostomy with a diagnostic scope, and the second was a complex and long laparoscopic operation to open the urethral obstruction using two upper and lower scopes at the same time, where the closed urethra was opened with a laser, a urethral catheter was placed, and the artificial opening of the nephrostomy was closed.
As for the third surgery, according to the urology specialist, it included revealing the location of the previous blockage and opening a simple blockage that was in the urethra.
The doctor indicated that the patient now enjoys good health, normal kidney function, and leads his life normally.
