Osteoporosis is a common disease in which bones become weak and easily break with even a slight fall or sudden impact, such as bending or coughing.

The risk of osteoporosis increases in the following cases:
– Lack of physical activity.
– Using some medications in high doses for a long time, such as cortisone, prednisone, heparin (an anticoagulant), and some medications used for epilepsy, gastroesophageal reflux, and cancer.
– Hyperactivity of the thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal glands.
– Lack of gonadal hormones: lack of testosterone in men, and lack of estrogen in women, especially if menopause begins early (before the age of 45 years).
– Excessive caffeine intake and smoking.
– Family history.
– Aging, as bone mass is destroyed faster than it is built.
– Loss of body weight due to anorexia, gastrointestinal surgery, etc., as the person does not get enough calcium and vitamin D.
