Specialized medical team at Imam Al-Hujjah Charitable Hospital successfully saved a one-week-old baby who was suffering from urinary tract obstruction, dilation in both kidneys and ureters, and acute kidney failure.
Urologist and Reproductive Surgeon, Dr. Amir Al-Aaraji, explained: “The one-week-old child from Karbala was suffering from a blockage in the urinary tract with dilation of both kidneys and ureters, along with a decrease in amniotic fluid.”
He adds: “This issue was diagnosed during the pregnancy, and most doctors believed that the child would be stillborn or pass away within a week after birth.”
He also added: “The child’s suffering continued after birth with difficulty in urination, deterioration in kidney function, and enlargement of both kidneys and ureters. The parents sought advice from many doctors, and most attempts to perform urinary catheterization failed due to an obstruction in the urinary tract caused by the posterior urethral valve.”
Dr. Amir Al-Araji explained that “Some doctors decided to create a hole from the bladder through the abdominal wall to facilitate urine drainage and reduce pressure on the kidneys, as a surgical intervention at such a young age can be challenging due to the small size of the urinary tract and reproductive organs.”
He continues: “But we at IHH, thanks to the availability of modern technologies, had a completely different opinion The child was admitted to the hospital, and a minimally invasive surgery was performed on the bladder and urethra to diagnose and open the posterior urethral valve. This was done without any surgical incisions or changes in the urinary tract, and by using a urinary catheter, the suffering of this child and their noble family came to an end, praise be to Allah.”
