A medical team at Imam Al-Hujjah Hospital in Holy Karbala succeeded in performing an operation to create an arteriovenous fistula in the left elbow of a patient suffering from chronic kidney failure, high blood pressure, and severe diabetes.
The patient’s condition was critical and it was difficult to find a suitable vein to place the device. This prevented his treatment from being accepted in several centers, according to thoracic and vascular surgery specialist Dr. Ihsan Al-Amiri.
Dr. Al-Amiri stated:

“The patient was admitted to the hospital in an emergency condition, after conducting all medical examinations and giving blood to treat anemia.”

He adds:

“The patient was prepared urgently under local anesthesia, as the patient’s body and health condition were not suitable for general or regional anesthesia.”

Dr. Al-Amiri confirmed

“We added an arteriovenous device (manufactured the patient’s vein into a device while modifying the venous route and connecting it to the patient’s artery) in the patient’s left elbow.”

He pointed out that

“The surgery took an hour and a half, and it was successful. The patient is in good health now, and no blood was given to the patient after the operation.”
