A specialized medical team at Imam al-Hujjah Hospital succeeded in performing a surgery on a patient who was suffering from a rare disease caused by nerve sclerosis.
Dr. Muhannad Salah, a specialist in maxillofacial surgery at Imam al-Hujjah Hospital, stated:

“The patient suffers from multiple sclerosis and trigeminal neuralgia, and has been complaining of pain for 8 years.”

He explains:

“We performed the operation on the patient under general anesthesia, during which the nerve was cut and sutured to the adjacent muscles from inside the mouth.”

Adding:

“Trigeminal neuralgia is a difficult disease because of the very severe pain it causes. The patient had gone to several centers to receive treatment, but he was not received due to his health condition. He was complaining of nerve stiffness, which led to general paralysis.”

Dr. Salah confirmed that

“After the operation, the patient improved and was discharged from the hospital after 24 hours.”

He continues:

“The difficulty in the operation lies in the fact that the patient is disabled, and here the primary role is played by the anesthesia team under the supervision of Dr. Zaid Al-Moussawi, who in turn monitored the patient’s health condition before the patient entered the O.R.”

The anesthesiologist uses a rare technique

For his part, the anesthesiologist at Imam al-Hujjah Hospital, Dr. Zaid al-Moussawi, said:

“We faced a great and very difficult challenge in this operation because the patient complained of a rare disease.”

He adds:

“This patient is difficult and there was a challenge in anesthesia, as he complains of a rare disease, which is multiple sclerosis.”

He confirmed that

“This disease affects multiple places in the brain, and its symptoms include difficulty in movement and pain.”

Dr. Al-Moussawi pointed out that:

“The patient is disabled due to his illness, which also affects the heart and leads to poor heart function and breathing.”

Regarding the specific and unique procedures used by the anesthesiologist during the operation, Dr. Al-Mousawi said:

“We decided to use a rare type of anesthesia with him because in such a case we must avoid giving the patient a dose of a muscle relaxant, so I decided to use a special technique with him called Non-paralytic General Anesthesia.”
