A medical team at Imam Al-Hujjah Hospital succeeded in performing a surgery on an 80-year-old elderly woman who was complaining of a large hernia in the abdominal wall and kidney failure, which caused her to accumulate fluids in the chest and abdomen.
General surgery specialist at Imam Al-Hujjah Hospital, Dr. Amer Al-Masoudi, stated:

“The patient suffers from chronic kidney failure and undergoes dialysis three times a week. She also suffers from chronic heart failure and high blood pressure.”

He explains:

“The large hernia and kidney failure caused fluids to accumulate in the abdomen and chest, while chronic high blood pressure caused the patient to have an enlarged heart muscle and an irregular heartbeat, so the option of general and spinal anesthesia was very dangerous to the patient’s life.”

He adds:

“Anesthesiologist Dr. Zaid Al-Moussawi decided to use regional anesthesia (paravertebral block).”

Dr. Al Masoudi confirmed:

“The surgery was completed successfully without any symptoms, and the patient did not need to enter intensive care after the surgery because regional anesthesia does not affect the work of the lungs and heart, and she was discharged from the hospital in great health.”
