The intensive care staff at Imam Al-Hujjah Hospital successfully saved the life of an elderly man with acute heart failure. The patient was in critical condition and scored 9/15 on the Glasgow Coma Scale. He had a low blood oxygen level and high Co2 level.

Dr. Hussein Al-Haj, head of the Intensive Care Department, reported that the patient was admitted to the ICU and put on a ventilator. He underwent medical examinations and laboratory tests and received the necessary treatment, in addition to respiratory physiotherapy and proper nutrition. The staff frequently changed the patient’s sleeping position to prevent bedsores and kept track of his vital signs.

Within 3 days of his stay under observation, the patient’s consciousness started to improve and his blood gas levels returned to normal. He was disconnected from the ventilation machine when it was confirmed that he could breathe on his own. The elderly man was monitored for an additional 24 hours to make sure of his safety, and later on, he was sent to the inpatient ward to complete his treatment.

The ICU team who followed up on the patient’s condition consisted of Dr. Emad Marji (interventional cardiologist), Dr. Hussein Al-Haj (intensivist/anesthesiologist), and a number of highly-experienced resident doctors.
