The anesthesia care team of Imam Al-Hujjah Charitable Hospital put great efforts into maintaining the stability of the condition of an 85-year-old man who needs inguinal hernia surgery.

Nevertheless, the challenge lies in the fact that the man’s ejection fraction (rate of blood pumping from the heart) is 20% because of a previous stroke and also having chronic diseases (hypertension and diabetes) which all affect the heart when undergoing general or regional anesthesia.

Anesthesiologist Dr. Zaid Almousawi stated: “We performed the necessary examinations as well as measuring vital signs. After regulating heart and lung rate, the operation began under the supervision of a general surgeon, Dr. Samir Adel. The patient underwent regional anesthesia which did not affect the heart and lung rate. The surgery was very successfull and lasted for half an hour. There was no need to put him in intensive care after the surgery.”.
