In a story marked by both pain and hope, the medical team at Imam Al-Hujjah Hospital successfully ended the suffering of a man in his seventies who had traveled from a neighboring province after enduring months of severe pain caused by a massive kidney stone in his left kidney.
The stone, measuring more than 10 cm, had caused intense symptoms including nausea, vomiting, and impaired kidney function.
The patient had previously visited several healthcare institutions but was unable to find a solution for his complex condition, especially as his general health had significantly deteriorated and his heavy smoking history made surgery under general anesthesia highly risky. As a result, more than one physician had declined to perform the operation.
However, at Imam Al-Hujjah Hospital, careful assessment and thorough preparation led to a different outcome.
Urology specialist Dr. Ameer Al-Araji, in collaboration with anesthesiologist Dr. Abd Al-Ameer Nouri, successfully performed the stone removal using percutaneous nephroscopy through a small surgical incision of no more than 1 cm, relying on regional anesthesia instead of general anesthesia to minimize risk.
Dr. Al-Araji explained:
“The case was particularly complex due to the large size of the stone and the patient’s overall health condition. However, after careful evaluation and a well-planned strategy, we were able to perform the procedure using percutaneous nephroscopy under regional anesthesia to reduce risks to the lowest possible level.”
He added:
“The stone was completely removed successfully without the need for general anesthesia, which represented an important safety factor in such cases.”
On the other hand, the anesthesia department played a vital role in creating the appropriate conditions for the procedure, as regional anesthesia enabled the medical team to carry out the surgical intervention safely and efficiently.
The operation was completed with full success, and the patient was discharged from the hospital in stable health, expressing his deep gratitude to the medical staff for the care, attention, and support he received throughout his treatment journey.
