An “unconventional” surgery was crowned with success for a 65-year-old woman who was suffering from severe kidney pain and chronic diseases that presented our doctors with a medical challenge that must be overcome successfully.

Through laparoscopy, the medical staff in our hospital was able to remove the staghorn calculi using very advanced methods.

In detail, urology specialist Dr. Yahya Al-Khafaji stated: “The patient visited Imam Al-Hujjah Hospital and was complaining of severe renal colic.”

He added: “It was discovered that there was a 4-cm-sized staghorn calculi in the kidney through radiological examinations.” The urology specialist pointed out that this case is considered “a medical challenge due to the patient’s general health condition and her medical history. She complains of chronic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, and hypothyroidism.”

He also stated: “We performed a percutaneous laparoscopic removal and fragmentation of the renal stone through a 1 cm incision without the need for a traditional surgery.”

The doctor confirmed, “The surgery was successful and the patient recovered quickly and did not develop any complications.”
