Obstetrician-gynecologist Sundus Karam warned of the dangers of abdominoplasty “tummy tuck”.

Dr. Karam explains: “Abdominoplasty changes your muscles and membranes drastically, which can be challenging for a surgeon performing any later-on procedure.”

She adds: “We discovered this during a hysterectomy on a woman in her 30s suffering from large fibrotic nodules and hemorrhagic polyps in the cervix. The patient had undergone a tummy tuck in the past, and she was also suffering from asthma, so we opted for local anesthesia. After we administered the anesthetic, we found out that her abdominal muscles and membranes were too stiff, they do not move or stretch as they severely lack elasticity. The patient wasn’t experiencing any pain, however, it was not easy to remove the uterus.”

“We summoned the anesthesia team, led by Dr. Abd Al-Ameer Noori, to find a solution for the lack of muscle relaxation so we can continue with the hysterectomy. They decided to give the patient general anesthesia to help her muscles relax, but that also didn’t work. After much struggle and administering different anesthetics, we were able to remove the uterus and ovaries, and save the patient’s life.”

Dr. Karam concludes: “Think thoroughly before undergoing abdominoplasty. It may seem like the fat has been removed, but it actually just travels to your insides, increasing your risk for heart disease, arteriosclerosis, and hypertension. I recommend that you follow a healthy diet and exercise instead of changing your natural anatomy so you can avoid many future complications.”
