There are some instructions that you must know before and during your surgery to help reduce any potential risks. These instructions include:
First: Instructions before your surgery:
1- Take the necessary lab tests, such as:
a) Hemoglobin percentage, chest x-rays, and virology screen (for all ages).
b) ECG and renal function (ages 40 and above).
c) Echo, liver function, and any other test that your surgeon or anesthesiologist requests.
2- Do not smoke for at least two weeks before your surgery.
3- The patient’s guardian must sign the consent form detailing what the surgeon will do and any potential risks.
4- Get checked by the anesthesiologist at least a day before your surgery to determine the type of anesthesia and any possible complications. Bring the prescription for your chronic diseases.
5- As for the medications you use:
a) You can continue to take aspirin or stop for 5 days before your surgery,
depending on your physician’s recommendations.
b) Do not take your diabetes medicine a day before your surgery.
c) You can take your hypertension medicine until the time of your surgery.
d) Inform your surgeon and anesthesiologist of any type of allergy.
6- It’s best to take some rest and have enough sleep on the days prior to your surgery.
Second: Instructions on the day of your surgery:
1- Do not eat or drink anything for 8 hours before your surgery, and your last meal should be light and moderate in quantity.
2- Take a shower and put on clean, comfortable, and easy-to-wear clothes.
3- Empty your bladder and bowels right before your surgery.
4- Do not wear any jewelry: rings, bracelets, earrings, necklaces, and handwatches.
5- As for women: Do not apply any makeup, nor nail polish because it makes it difficult to detect your oxygen level.
6- Inform the anesthesia team if you wear a hearing aid or dentures.
7- Confirm with your surgeon the surgical site.
