The urology team at Imam Al-Hujjah Hospital, led by Dr. Ameer Al-Araji, performed a complex surgery on a woman in her 60s, suffering from urinary incontinence.
Dr. Ameer stated that: “The patient came to the hospital complaining of urinary incontinence that has negatively impacted her social life. The medical examination revealed that she had a small overactive bladder and 5th-degree vesicoureteral reflux as well as frequent urinary infections, which called for surgical intervention.”
He added: “This surgery was certainly challenging because the patient had heart problems and she was a heavy smoker (4 cigarette packs a day). This made general anesthesia impossible so the patient had to be put under regional anesthesia by Dr. Abd Al-Ameer Noori.
We used botox injections to ease and enlarge the bladder and performed suprapubic cystostomy. We also repaired the defect in the valve between the bladder and each affected ureter, and on the third day after surgery the patient was discharged from the hospital in perfect health.”
