Thoracoscope saves a young man from suffocation: Minimally invasive surgery restores breathing to a collapsed lung

In a remarkable medical achievement, Dr. Ihsan Al Ameri, a thoracic and vascular surgeon at Imam Al Hujjah Hospital, was able to save the life of a 22-year-old man by performing an advanced surgical thoracoscopic procedure, during which he removed obstetric air sacs from the right lung, in addition to closing a bronchopneumonic fistula.

The patient had arrived at the hospital with a severe pneumothorax on the right side, which led to almost complete collapse of the right lung, causing severe respiratory distress and unresponsiveness to conservative treatment. After a series of careful examinations and the deterioration of his respiratory condition, it was decided to perform an urgent surgical intervention using Thoracoscopic Surgery, without the need for a traditional surgical opening.

The operation was meticulously performed, carefully managing the obstetric air sacs, a common cause of recurrent air embolism, and closing the air fistula responsible for air leakage from the lung into the pleural space.

The operation was successful without any complications and restored the patient’s ability to breathe normally, a living testimony to the efficiency of the medical team and the advanced technologies available at Imam Hujjah Hospital.
