The Radiology Department at Imam Al-Hujjah Hospital has brought a complex medical mystery to an end after successfully diagnosing a rare condition medically known as Sclerosing Encapsulating Peritonitis, commonly referred to as Abdominal Cocoon.
The diagnosis was made under the supervision of Dr. Imad Hussein Al-Kafishi and Dr. Ahmed Kazem Abbas Al-Kalabi, through the highly professional efforts of the Radiology Department team, an achievement that reflects the department’s diagnostic precision, clinical awareness, and advanced scientific expertise.
The department explained that this condition is extremely rare and is characterized by the formation of a thick fibrous membrane that envelops the small intestine, leading to recurrent abdominal pain and symptoms of intestinal obstruction that may persist for long periods. Due to its similarity to many other gastrointestinal disorders, it often presents a significant diagnostic challenge.
It was noted that the turning point in diagnosing the case came through advanced imaging studies, where computed tomography (CT scanning) played a decisive role in clearly demonstrating the clustering of the small bowel within a distinct fibrous sac. This enabled the medical team to reach an accurate and early diagnosis, an essential factor in determining the appropriate treatment pathway.
The department also stated that the patient is an Iraqi expatriate residing in the United Kingdom, who visited the hospital during a trip to Iraq. He was referred to the Radiology Department by Dr. Imad Abdul-Sahib to complete the imaging evaluation, a step that reflects the growing confidence in the hospital’s diagnostic capabilities.
Hospital management affirmed that this achievement adds to its record of success in diagnosing rare and complex cases, praising the competence of the medical and technical staff as well as the continuous advancement in modern equipment and technologies. The Radiology Department continues to play a vital role in supporting clinical decision-making and enhancing the quality of healthcare both within Iraq and beyond.
