The medical team at Imam Al-Hujjah Hospital, led by Dr. Ihsan Al-Ameri, a thoracic and vascular surgery specialist, successfully saved a fifty-year-old patient from having her left leg amputated. The patient had suffered for a week from severe blood flow insufficiency, which had not been accurately diagnosed at other medical centers.
Dr. Al-Ameri stated: “The patient was suffering from chronic diabetes and came to us after repeated visits without a clear diagnosis. She began to show serious symptoms, including redness of the foot, darkening of some areas, severe pain, and extreme coldness in the leg.”
He adds: “After conducting the necessary tests, we discovered a blockage in the genicular artery and a blood clot that caused severe ischemia. The situation was alarming, indicating the development of gangrene, meaning the patient was on the verge of losing the limb completely.”
Dr. Al-Ameri explains: “It was decided to perform an emergency procedure, which involved angioplasty of the genicular artery and the arteries of the leg and foot. During this procedure, we removed the clot and opened and expanded the arteries using a medical balloon. The procedure took about an hour and a half.”
He confirmed that the surgery “was a complete success, with no significant complications recorded,” noting that the patient subsequently underwent “close monitoring for two days in the hospital before leaving in good health and with a clear improvement in the affected limb.”
He concluded by saying: “These cases remind us of the importance of early and accurate diagnosis, especially for diabetics, who are more susceptible to such serious complications.”
