Imam Al-Hujjah Hospital medical staff saves a patient from blood poisoning, septic shock, and acute kidney failure

At a time when all indicators were pointing to danger, a fifty-year-old patient arrived at the emergency room of Imam Al-Hujjah Hospital. She had a medical history burdened by a number of ailments, from chronic rheumatoid arthritis to having only one kidney since childhood.

She suffered from a persistent fever, extreme fatigue, severe abdominal pain, recurrent vomiting, and rapid breathing, accompanied by near-consciousness. Within hours, her vital functions collapsed, and she went into acute septic shock resulting from a severe urinary tract infection, accompanied by acute kidney failure.

The situation was not temporary, but rather life-threatening and it required immediate intervention. The patient was admitted to the intensive care unit, where she was placed under close supervision and provided with medication to control her blood pressure and stimulate her vital organs.

The complexity of the case lay not only in the acute symptoms, but also in the patient’s long medical history: episodes of urinary stones, previous ureteroscopies, and low immunity due to her rheumatic disease. All of this presented the medical team with a double challenge: accurate diagnosis and rapid treatment.

Amidst fears of a blood clot or arterial obstruction, the patient underwent comprehensive tests to rule out heart or limb complications. The final diagnosis confirmed bacterial sepsis resulting from acute urinary tract infection and chronic renal reflux.

The meticulous treatment journey began: effective antibiotics, support for the function of his single kidney, strict monitoring of fluids, blood pressure, and breathing, along with intensive nursing care.

In a scene that embodies the triumph of medicine and humanity, her condition gradually improved, her kidney functions resumed, and her breathing and heart rate stabilized. She was discharged from the hospital smiling, leaving behind a story of medical courage to be told.

The medical team:
• Dr. Amir Hamed Al-Husseini – Internal Medicine Specialist
• The intensive care staff, nursing heroes, anesthesia technicians, and resident doctors
who together formed the first line of defense against a critical case that almost took his life.
