High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is a chronic medical condition where blood pressure in the arteries is persistently elevated. When blood pressure rises, the heart has to work harder to pump blood throughout the body.

Warning!
High blood pressure can cause severe health damage, leading to serious problems such as heart attacks, strokes, and kidney failure.

What do blood pressure measurement results mean?

Normal blood pressure:

  • Less than 120/80 mmHg.
  • Pre-Hypertension stage:
  • 120-140/80-90 mmHg.
  • This stage serves as a warning that the individual may be at risk of developing high blood pressure in the future and needs to take steps to control their blood pressure before it worsens.

Hypertension (Stage 1):

  • 140-160/90-100 mmHg.
  • At this stage, doctors may recommend lifestyle changes and possibly medication to control blood pressure.

Hypertension (Stage 2):

  • 160/100 mmHg or higher.
  • This stage typically requires more aggressive medical treatment and possibly more than one medication to control blood pressure.

Hypertensive crisis:

  • Higher than 180/120 mmHg.
  • This condition requires urgent medical treatment as it can be life-threatening.
